Glass balls on old lightning rods serve a practical function in enhancing lightning conduction. The use of glass balls on lightning rods is believed to help promote the dissipation of electrical charges and reduce the likelihood of a lightning strike causing damage to the structure it is protecting. Here’s why:
1. Insulation: Functionally, glass balls act as insulators. They prevent lightning from traveling down the rod and potentially causing damage to the building. By providing an insulating layer, they help protect the structure.
2. Reducing Direct Strikes: The spherical shape of the glass balls reduces the risk of the rod being struck directly by lightning. When lightning strikes, the electrical charge disperses harmlessly into the air rather than concentrating on the rod itself.
3. Ornamental Appeal: Beyond their functional purpose, glass balls were also used for ornamental reasons. They embellished lightning rods and added visual interest. These glass balls are now prized by collectors and have been used in weathervanes as well.
