The very first PING Anser putters by Karsten Solheim were produced from late 1965 through most of 1966. These had the city Scottsdale and its zip code stamped on the insert. Currently referred to often as "Dale Heads".
It appears the Karsten org. was first incorporated in 1966 as Karsten Co. On June 30, 1967 the corp. name changed to Karsten Manufacturing Co. (KARSTEN MGF. CO. stamped on clubs after July 1967.)
The unique PING brand Anser putters have its current city and zip code stamped on its putter insert. This can help identify the age of the golf putters.
From mid-1966 to 1967, the city and zip code on the Anser putters was "Phoenix 85029".
The item for sale here has the US Patent No. D207227 stamped on its insert, along with KARSTEN CO. PHOENIX 85029. It has the famous "sound slot" through the club sole and the "plumber's neck" hosel. The head composition is manganese and bronze with a steel shaft and length of 35.5" (measured from top of grip straight down the shaft to the club bottom). It has the original grip (pictured) with the grip top showing "Golf Pride" "Made in USA" and "Traction Action". The insert area where the words "Made in USA" are is not legible from wear.
If interested, come take a closer look at this great putter, whether you want it to hear the distinctive "ping" when it strikes the ball or if you decide to just collect great golf clubs. Apologies if any of the above notes, dates etc. are not 100%.
Little Chute to see or purchase this great piece of golf history.
